New Bedford built a hurricane barrier for a reason. The same coastal forces that shaped this city's harbor shape its trees — and understanding how they fail is how you keep yours standing.
Salt. Every onshore blow carries salt spray inland — coating leaves, scorching foliage on the windward side, and slowly weakening trees closest to the water. That's why seaside maples in the South End and Fairhaven often look "half sick": browned, thinned crowns facing the harbor, healthy growth on the lee side. Chronic salt stress doesn't topple a tree by itself; it produces the deadwood and decline that the next storm finishes.
Sustained coastal wind. Inland storms gust; coastal storms lean — hours of sustained load from nor'easters and tropical systems riding up the Atlantic. Sustained load finds different weaknesses than gusts do: it works cracked unions open gradually, pumps root plates loose in saturated ground, and snaps salt-weakened deadwood a gust would have merely shaken.
Sandy, shallow coastal soils. Much of the South Coast sits on sandy glacial outwash — fast-draining, which trees like, but low-grip, which they don't. Add a week of autumn rain and root plates in wet sandy ground release like anchors in soup. Whole-tree tipping (root-plate failure) is the signature South Coast storm loss, and it's the one that takes fences, cars, and roof corners with it.
The pattern to memorize: around here, trees rarely fail out of nowhere. Salt and wind write the warning list — deadwood, one-sided decline, thinning crowns, heaving soil at the base — and the hurricane-season storm collects it. Every autumn we clear trees whose failure was visible in July. Most coastal trees don't need to come down — they need maintenance matched to coastal physics: thin the sail so sustained wind flows through the crown; deadwood ruthlessly, because salt-killed limbs are the first casualties of every blow; correct young trees' structure before weak V-unions mature into failure points; and respect the root zone — every trench, pool dig, and driveway cut on the windward side removes anchoring you'll miss in September. Removal is for the trees past helping: taken down in controlled sections before the season does it uncontrolled.
